ABOUT TERRA MIDGETT CLARK
My pronouns are she, her, hers. I have a Masters of Science (MS) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Portland State University, am a National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Animal Assisted Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). My graduate program was a three-year, full-time, intensive program where I was trained in clinical mental health counseling. My Bachelor of Arts (BA) in General Psychology from University of North Carolina at Asheville. I find the complexities of life as a human constantly fascinating and engaging and believe in our ability for growth, healing and change. I choose this path because I personally value growth and aim to continue to explore and learn more about myself, I believe my gifts are uniquely fitted to this work, and I love being a part of other’s healing and change.
MEET GRACELAND
My Co-therapist for Animal Assisted Therapy Services
I rescued Graceland from a working farm where she was not given the love she need or allowed to give the abundant love she loves to give. Graceland is a true sweet heart with a love for people and for being loved on. Graceland is still in training learning to be a Co-therapist. She is a Great Pyrenees mix, a large and gentle dog. Graceland is looking forward to meeting you and wiggling her butt in excitement.

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."
Carl Rogers

COUNSELING APPROACH
It can be extremely hard to reach out for help. I hope I can make that process feel a little easier. I am honored to do this work and have great respect for the courage it takes to engage in self exploration with another person. I believe strongly in a collaborative working relationship bringing together your knowledge of yourself, your needs and wants, and my skills and knowledge. I work hard to show up for you to be fully present and engaged in our work and to make sure that you feel safe in our relationship. Through our work together you have the opportunity to increase self awareness, understand and accept patterns, learn new skills and ways of engaging in relationships and in the world and feel empowered in your life.
I believe in the strength and resilience of people. People are complex and all of us have values, beliefs, experiences, and traits that make us into unique individuals. I also understand that we are all part of larger social and environmental systems. Sometimes, our desires are conflicting, or confusing, sometimes barriers feel overwhelming. I help clients explore themselves and their world and gain insight. Client’s find empowerment in the things they have control over so they can make choices to live their life in a way that honors their values and is in line with their goals. I believe this exploration can be facilitated by and clarity can be achieved through the examination of our emotions. I also believe that it is critical when doing this work to be supported by an accepting, loving, and authentic environment.
I ground my work in Internal Family Systems Theory and Person Centered Theory. Internal Family Systems theory views our complex internal world as similar to a family with multiple parts and roles interacting together. At the center of it all we all have a core self that when we are connected to it allows us to live in our values, work with all parts of ourselves and remain grounded. Our parts of self can often be burdened, overworked and overwhelmed. Through open curiosity and inviting these parts of self to the table we are able to grow our connection to our core self and help our parts to heal and work together. Person Centered Theory prioritizes the relationship between client and counselor. As a counselor I aim to be an authentic real person in the room, to provide unconditional care, respect, and acceptance, and to understand your lived experience.
